Sand Saga Insider: November 2024

Welcome back to Sand Saga's monthly update! November introduced several new features to the engine. Let's take a closer look at what's new.

November Additions

Update 24w45a
• Game: Introduced Brutal Mode, which enables blood (supporters only)
• Game: Renamed temperature tools (°C− ⇒ 20 °C, °C+ ⇒ 1000 °C, °C⧺ ⇒ 1500 °C)

Update 24w47a
• Game: Reworked entities – they can overlap now, many issues fixed
• Web: Introduced user profiles

* Minor bug fixes and tweaks are not listed

New Entity Subsystem
Over time, it became clear that the original entity subsystem had several issues stemming from its initial design. Entities, particularly birds, often got stuck and felt overly fragile in their interactions. The new subsystem was designed with overlapping entities as a fundamental feature, ensuring smoother behavior. Additionally, the method for forming groups or flocks has been improved, making entity movement and interaction more natural and dynamic.

Brutal Mode
Blood and blood splatter effects have been added to the game. This feature adds a layer of visual intensity to explosions and interactions (with acid, for example). This will be even more interesting when more entities are added in the future, as the game currently includes only small fish and birds.

Android App

We are still looking for volunteers to help with testing. I would be grateful if you decided to get involved. See Sand Saga Insider: September 2024.

Further Development

Thanks to the new entity subsystem, we are one step closer to adding characters or other larger entities to the game. This represents the biggest challenge for the future. However, there are also a few other aspects of the game that could be improved.
